Some water meter boxes are mounted near the house, others are in the ground almost always in the front of the house or in the easeman between the street and the sidewalk in front of your house. But wherever your water meter is located, you rely on it to work properly and to provide us with accurate information. After all, our water bills are based on the numbers from our water meters.

But what if you notice that your water meter has a leak? What do you do?

1. If you notice water dripping directly from your wall mounted water meter and/or the piping or you notice that there’s a puddle of water on the ground under the meter – that certainly indicates a leak. If your water meter is in the ground, simply lift the cover. If you see water puddling up in there – then yes, you clearly have a leak. The first step is to immediately call your local water department for information on what needs to be done. It may be that your meter needs to be replaced.

2. Sometimes you will need to open the meter box with a screwdriver or a pair of pliers so make sure to have those on hand in case you need them.

3. The water company may come out to investigate the problem and they may recommend that you hire a plumber to fix a problem that they discovered (which means you would keep your existing water meter).

Who Is Responsible For Fixing Water Meter Leaks?

Generally speaking, if the leak is found to be between the water meter and your house – then you are responsible for repairing it. But if the leak is between the water meter and the city’s main water line, the your local water department is responsible for fixing and/or replacing the unit.
