If your bathtub drain is corroded, the only fix is to replace it. Although that sounds like it might be a simple task – it’s not so easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There are 3 aspects of the project that are very difficult for most people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you are not a handyman type of homeowner, we recommend that you call in a professional plumber to do the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the problem with your drain is rust – you may be able to save it by cleaning it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It’s easy to do, just follow these steps…<\/p>\n\n\n\n
1) Use a steel wool or wire brush to remove any loose rust. You won’t be able to remove all of it, just the top layer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
2) Fill a spray bottle with 3 parts distilled white vinegar and 1 part lemon juice. So, a spray bottle that holds 2 cups should be 1.5 cups of vinegar and 1\/2 cup of lemon juice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
3) Shake the solution in the spray bottle and then spray it generously over the bathtub drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
4) Shake a generous amount of baking soda over the bathtub drain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
5) Let that all sit for at least 1 hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
6) Use the steel wool or wire brush again to scrub the drain. This will require a bit of strength so don’t be shy to scrub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
7) Rinse it all away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Caution: be careful not to scratch the surface of your bathtub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If the rust is so severe that it is not coming off then the next solution is to replace the bathtub drain with a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
