Here in Georgia, water heater expansion tanks (aka Thermal Expansion) are required on new water heaters. So, the next time you have your water heater replaced – you will be required to also install an expansion tank if you don’t yet have one.

What Is An Expansion Tank?

Expansion tanks are essentially safety devices to help you minimize the risk of damage to your hot water tank. They are an “add on” to your existing hot water heater and are often installed on the water supply pipe to the water heater.Normally this is on the wall next to or very close by your hot water tank.

They take up very little space but can save you a good amount of money down the road, especially as your tank ages.

Expansion tanks are available in 2 gallon and 4.5 gallon sizes. Consult your plumber for the best size for your home.

What Is The Purpose Of A Water Heater Expansion Tank?

An expansion tank is protection for your water heater. It not only does it protect your heater but your plumbing pipes as well.

The main purpose of the expansion tank is to help to prevent any excessive water pressure that normally occurs in your hot water heater. Of course, your water heater can manage the water pressure that is normally generated but after years of use or excessive use or some other issue that may cause your water pressure to rise – the expansion tank will be able to “take the load off” of the water heater which reduces the chances of any cracks and leaks not only in the heater unit but in the plumbing pipes as well.

Needless to say – this helps to prevent the kind of damage (and expense) that can occur if those cracks and leaks were to develop.

How Long Do Water Heater Expansion Tanks Last?

The average lifespan of an expansion tank is about 5 to 10 years. You can consult with your plumber on how to best control the water pressure in your water heater to help both your heater unit and your expansion tank to last as long as possible.

Will An Expansion Tank Increase Water Pressure?

No, an expansion tank does not increase the water pressure in your home. It does help to keep the pressure UP because the extra water tends to boost up the volume of water. But generally speaking, the way an expansion tank works does not increase your water pressure.
